DESPITE MY BEST INTENTIONS, MY FULL COURSE load this semester has made it impossible to write a great Canadian novel set in Edmonton. However, it has also occurred to me that I might be able to increase my understanding of nineteenth-century poetry and hone my nascent literary prowess by writing nineteenth-century-style poems about Edmonton. Here is my first attempt.

Ye banks and malls o’ Bonnie Doon

Why don’t you bloom so fair

Why can’t we have some bonnie braes

Instead o’ concrete squares.

Thou breakest my heart, thou Bonnie Doon

That sits atop the plain

So diff ’rent from the fairer lands

With glens and gloomy rain.

Thou breakest my heart, thou Bonnie Doon

Thou miles of donut shops

For I so yearn for fairer lands

Where birds and bunnies hop.

Aft hae I roved through Bonnie Doon

To have some fresh poutine

I pined for lands with rocky cliffs

And craggy landscapes green.

With downcast heart, I caught a bus

The noble Forty-Three

Begone ye concrete malls and banks,

Petro-Cans and CIBCs.
